Skullgirls - Rollback Camera Interpolation Test
Переглядів 4,2 тис.4 роки тому
THIS IS INTENTIONALLY HORRIBLE ONLINE LAG. This is not what the game normally looks like! It's a test of a mode where the camera moves smoothly when there is a rollback, instead of popping around, much more like FPSes do interpolation when they get new data. The character still pops, but it's maybe a bit less jarring because the background is smoother.
Why Wi-fi Sucks for Gaming!
Переглядів 55 тис.4 роки тому
Wi-fi can ALWAYS experience random packet delays. It has NOTHING TO DO with how fast your internet is. Don't play games over wi-fi if you can avoid it. If you want to run the ping test command yourself, here it is with some extra reps added: ping 8.8.8.8 -n 40 In Win10 just copy that, hit the Windows key, paste it, hit Enter. Skullgirls GGPO fix test - 5,400 mile California-to-England netplay matches
Переглядів 2,7 тис.4 роки тому
It really friggin' works! This is direct game feed of a 190 ping set, Mike Z vs Mr. Peck, over 5,400 miles. It was INCREDIBLY playable even at that ping! This is the first time I've been able to play him online where I could care enough about the gameplay to get mad at losing, rather than just being annoyed at netplay. (I got rocked, because he's better than I am and it was 3 AM for me. :^) Sor...

    You forgot to mention another important thing about wifi. It is only able to send or receive at any particular time unlike a wired connection which can send and receive at the same time

    Great video. This explains why I can get a lot of rollback but my opponent on Wi-Fi doesn't. We won't be able to talk sense into everyone to use wires for online games, but we can at least hope and demand that every game dev puts in an option to disable connections with Wi-Fi players.

    Good info. Still finding it pretty crazy how my Wi-Fi connection got better results than MikeZ's wired using the same test lol. Ultimately, I think games should implement jitter detection over Wi-Fi detection. It is very easy to trick many games into thinking you're using a wired connection.

    While wired is "technically better", a *good* wifi network can be consistently low latency. If you use 5ghz, and narrow channel widths you can pretty well guarantee you don't get packet jitter. There's just a lot of spectrum in 5ghz and there's always a slice that is totally quiet. Also 5ghz doesn't go through many walls, so you won't get interference unless it originated within a wall or 2 of your network. Check out this tool I made on a wifi client s80.us. On a well-configured 5ghz client, you absolutely see minutes if not hours of extremely low jitter. If you want to absolutely minimize it, use 20mhz channel widths. This will limit your throughput but improve the stability. 802.11ax is even more stable. Again use wired if you can, but many people game on wifi and never have complaints.

    • @johannliebert2870

      This is absolutely true, but not many will acknowledge it.

    • @heavymetalmixer91
      @heavymetalmixer91 Рік тому

      It's not so much about latency but stability. Wi-fi has three stability problems when compared to ethernet besides what Mike Z shows in this video: a) Way more spikes, because more changes in latency and in a wider range. b) More packets lost. c) It's only Half Duplex, so it can only send or receive data, but not both at the same time while Ethernet CAN.
